Tips for choosing a good name for your dog
- Choosing the perfect name for your dog may not be as easy at it seems. There are several things you should keep in mind before making your decision.
- When choosing a name. Keep in mind that you will be using it for many years to come. You'll have to call it out several times a day. You'll be uing it for both praise and scold. You'll need it when you vist the vet and in the park. So choose carefully.
- It is important to keep the name short. Dogs respond better to one or two syllable names.
- You should avoid naming your dog something that sounds like any of the standard commands. Names that sound like Sit, Stay, Come, Down, Fetch or No are not good choices as they may confuse the dog when you use them.
- If you choose a long name. Keep in ind the shortened version. Just like people. It will eventually be shortened. Does it still sound good? Does it still have the decired effect?
- Using your dog's breed and heritage can be a great inspiration. For example if you have a Schnauzer. You might want to use a name orignating from Germany. If you have a poodle. A french name may be in order.
- Your job, life or the place where you live can be a great inspiration for a dog name.
- Study the behaviour and appearance of your dog. Maybe has a particular mark or it acts a certain way. Does it do things that may inspire a name?
- Your dog won't always be a puppy. So keep that in mind when choosing the name. You might not think it is as great a name when your dog is fully grown.
- It is a good idea to look up the meaning of a name. Some names may have hidden meanings that do not fit your dog. Even if it sounds fantastic.
